Trail 1 · Old Town Food Walk — Half-Day or Full-Day. Start at Wuma Street, the commercial spine of the old city, where Republican-era arcades still shade the pavement and century-old shops keep their original recipes. At Changren Wonton Shop on Jiefang Street — a Michelin Bib Gourmand pick — thin wrappers and fresh filling meet a broth sharpened with yellow wine. A few doors along, Chenhui Fish Balls serves the local paradox: Wenzhou fish balls are not round, but irregular strips served in a clear, clean soup. Xianqian Tangyuan Shop has filled glutinous rice dumplings with sesame paste for a century; Dawang Dengzhan Gao fries a crisp shell around sweet shredded radish. Turn into Shamaohe alley for potstickers, nine-layer cake, and almond jelly.

In the afternoon, leave Wuma Street for Mochi Fang, where the inkstone pool and the Dong'ou King Temple mark an older Wenzhou, then follow Gongyuan Road toward Chan Street through the district's unbroken commercial history. For an extra course, look for Wengong Nine-Layer Cake, Axing Songgao, and Shouying Pig Intestine Noodles on Cangqiao Street — a street-food classic the city lists as intangible heritage.

For the full day, end the evening at Nantang Cultural Tourism Zone. Watch the "Tanghe Night Painting" light show over the river, then dine along the bank: Zheng Zhengliang Seafood (Michelin Bib Gourmand) for Jiangxie Sheng (raw marinated crab) and garlic fish skin, or De'erle Nantang Grand Hotel for classic Ou Cuisine. The old town is dense and walkable, with shared bikes for longer hops; from Wenzhou South Railway Station, the S1 light rail line reaches the city centre directly.

Trail 2 · Island Seafood Day Tour — Dongtou Fisherman's Feast. Dongtou is Wenzhou's island district; this day is about fishing-village life. In the morning on Dongtou Village Food Street, walk into any seafood stall, pick what is alive in the tanks, and have it cooked on the spot — or buy your own catch and ask a stall to prepare it. Neighbouring Shajiao Food Street keeps its signatures: razor clam soup, oyster omelette, salt-and-pepper tofu fish, laver meatballs, Cantonese-style yellow croaker, and spicy octopus.

Afternoon stops: Dongsha Global Seafood Market, where the "from ocean to table" feast continues; Jiucaiao beach; the Sea Moon Embankment. With spare time, climb Wanghai Tower for a view of the hundred islands, or wander the color-painted houses of Dongtou Village. Try the local sweet-potato dumplings — visitors can join in making them — and laver meatballs made with Cangnan laver, whose first harvest is the tenderest. The island is about one to one and a half hours by car from downtown Wenzhou; a hired car or driving is the practical choice, and taxis or local buses link the stops.

Trail 3 · Heritage & Cuisine Day Tour — Ruian Wooden Movable Type + Jinshi Banquet. This trail pairs a craft with a banquet, both from the world of scholars. In the morning at Dongyuan Village, the China Wooden Movable-Type Printing Exhibition Hall preserves a technique UNESCO lists on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. Learn the craft step by step — picking characters, setting the type, inking the frame, and pressing the print — then sign and carry home the piece you made.

At midday, head to Caocun: over two centuries between the Southern Song and the Ming dynasty, this one village produced 82 jinshi — scholars who passed the highest imperial examination — earning it the nickname "China's first village of jinshi." The Jinshi Restaurant names its dishes for exam themes: "Ascending to the Top" (suomian — the village's sun-dried noodles — boiled in glutinous-rice wine with dried shrimp, mushrooms, and egg), "Leaping the Dragon Gate" (braised local carp kept whole with scales), "Feathered Hat with Tassels" (pork-fat dumplings), and "Clean and Upright" (lotus-seed soup). The dried noodles hang horizontally in the sun, resembling a Song-dynasty official's hat — hence "jinshi noodles."

Optional afternoon: Ponan Historical and Cultural District in Pingyang, an ancient street condensing a thousand years of the county town's history, with Pingyang Yellow Tea, stir-fried rice noodles, and nine-layer cake among the heritage foods; the Indigo-Printed Calico Museum nearby offers hands-on clamp-resist dyeing workshops. Ruian is about 40 minutes from downtown Wenzhou by high-speed train or car; Dongyuan Village and Caocun sit close together, so a hired car is convenient.

What the trails leave you with. Wenzhou is not one taste but several, each tied to a geography and a history: a merchant town, a fishing coast, a land of scholars.
