Every Lantern Festival, close to a hundred thousand people gather in the mountain town of Sankui in Taishun County, where six hundred tables stretch along a single street. The Hundred Family Banquet began eight hundred years ago as a communal meal shared by the Zhang family after disputes had been settled. The idea behind it remains the same: people who may disagree still sit down and eat together.

In the mountains of Wencheng, the descendants of Liu Bowen ¡ª a strategist who helped found the Ming Dynasty ¡ª still cook from a book he wrote. The Bowen Family Banquet is held after the Taigong Sacrifice, an ancestral ceremony held twice a year, and its menu is drawn from his own book of practical knowledge. Six hundred years later, his descendants still cook from it ¡ª and now, so can a visitor who books a stay.

Six nights at Expo Garden ¡ª fishing-boat lights, open-mic singing and free tastings of the freshest croaker ¡ª drew more than ten thousand visitors and put Wenzhou¡¯s signature fish on the national map.

A giant screen, fresh beer from the local Budweiser plant, and more than 70 food stalls ¡ª Wenzhou turned the 2026 World Cup into a week-long summer night economy, with satellite markets across the city.

Longwan¡¯s ancient street dressed as Tang-dynasty Chang¡¯an for the New Year ¡ª immersive theatre in the lanes, and a 66-table feast that turned the town¡¯s welcome into one long table.

In September 2024, twelve teams each had two hours to prepare a full banquet live on stage. Wenzhou¡¯s entry was the Dragon Boat Feast ¡ª ten dishes arranged around Rui¡¯an¡¯s dragon boat tradition, using only local ingredients. The chief referee told the team their banquet could be "state dinner-worthy." This is the story of a meal that reads like a narrative.

In December 2024, a chef from a Taishun hotel won the Special Gold Award at China's top-level cooking competition. He was not the first: a teacher did it in 2023, and a young chef did it in 1999. Three chefs, three competitions, twenty-five years apart ¡ª each time, Ou cuisine stepped onto the national stage as an outsider, and each time, it came away with gold.

In July 2026, Wenzhou's street food took the stage at a province-wide snack competition in Cangnan ¡ª and a century-old meat-swallow shop took gold after changing the filling but leaving its hand-beaten wrapper untouched. The wrapper is the heritage; the filling is the competition.
